Professional Development (commonly referred to as "PD") is a highly sought experience whereby Bermuda College employees who have concluded their first year of employment can request the college's support to attend job-related training and educational activities outside of the college.

Whether taken abroad or online, these activities have proven to be beneficial to those who have engaged in them.   PD increases its return on investment when the employees return to campus and share their experiences with their colleagues and make a difference in their work.

Here are a few success stories:

Theresa Martin-Miller, Administrative Assistant, PACE

PD Clarifies Team Roles and increases Team Effectiveness

 My PD experience was awesome!

I traveled overseas for a 4-Day Seminar for Administrative Assistants hosted by P A Douglas & Associates. It was their 43rd Annual event.

I met Admin Assistants from around the world. As we broke up into groups I found that no matter where we were from, Administrative Assistants do the same things… and have the same problems (smile!)

One very valuable activity was identifying Team Member Roles. As we did this activity, I recognized that I carry out the role of Supporter in my department, which is the Division of PACE.

I also recognized the roles that each of my co-workers fulfill. Once I returned to office, I conducted the activity in our own training room. My co-workers identified themselves according to the four roles. Their perceptions about their own roles and my role were the exact same! This helped me to understand them better. It has improved communications and how we work together to get the job done in our very busy department.

This PD Activity improved my time management and execution of tasks. These were noted by my director.

My PD Experience was very beneficial!

Dr. Ali Arouzi, Professor Mathematics

PD Added a Boost to Online Teaching & Learning

At ICTCM (International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics), I attended workshops and seminars on the effective use of technology in the classroom in creating robust videos, interactive visualizations of abstract topics as well as web-based assignments for teaching Mathematics. All of them became very beneficial in teaching remotely during the pandemic.

PD Helped Math Department to Better Serve Developmental Students

I also made presentations at the conferences. Notable was my participation in discussions pertaining to Developmental Mathematics students at NADE (National Association for Developmental Education). I attended workshops on implementing an effective co-requisite model at Bermuda College to help the underprepared students who need additional support. I was able to share some of the highlights and activities with my colleagues in the department
